About Me

Zhun Fan is a full Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering of Shantou University, the Director of the International Joint Research Center for Evolutionary Intelligence and Robotics, the Director of the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Signal and Image Processing, and the Executive Dean of Shantou Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing. He is selected as a talent of the Thousand Talents Plan of Young Professionals in China and a talent of Sail Plan in Guangdong Province, China.

He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in control engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 1995 and 2000, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, in 2004. Before joining STU, he was an Associate Professor with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) from 2007 to 2011, first with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, then with the Department of Management Engineering, and as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the same university from 2004 to 2007.

His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Mechatronics Design Automation, Robotics, Computer Vision, Evolutionary Computation and Machine Learning. He has been a principal investigator for research projects sponsored by Danish Agency of Science, Technology and Innovation, National Science Foundation of USA, and National Natural Science Foundation of China. Over his career, he has developed a series of robotic prototypes, including a transportation robot used in hospitals, a welding robot equipped with a machine vision module, a multi-functional mobile manipulator, an autonomous service robot, a mobile manipulator for crack detection and sealing in power plants, a bionic six-leg robot, among many others. He has published three research monographs, and more than 150 papers in international journals and conferences, including over 50 SCI-indexed journal papers. His h-index is 20.He is a recipient of the Chinese Overseas Contribution Award for the research work in intelligent design of mechatronic and robotic systems, and a recipient of Scientific and Technical Award of China General Chamber of Commerce for the research in design of robots and their applications.

Teaching Training

From April 2005 to August 2006, He participated in the school's training program Education in University Teaching at DTU (UDtU*) and obtained the qualification certificate. The program is mainly to train teachers to use PBL (Problem-based Learning) methods in teaching practice and advanced CDIO (Conceive - Design - Implement - Operate) teaching idea.
