Fan Zhun, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, PhD Supervisor, is a national high-level talent, a “Yangfan Plan” urgently needed talent for Guangdong Province, vice president of the First Executive Committee of the Overseas High-level Youth Talent Association, an innovative talent recipient of the China Overseas Chinese Contribution Award, one of the first outstanding youth talents of Shantou, and a leader in scientific and technological innovation in Shantou. He was selected as one of the top 2% of scientists in the world by Stanford University in 2021 and 2022. He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Michigan State University (MSU) in May 2004 and has served as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) since 2004. He has been a Distinguished Professor at Shantou University since April 2012 and has been the Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering at the College of Engineering of Shantou University since January 2013. From September 2014 to December 2022, he served as Director of Guangdong Key Laboratory of Digital Signal and Image Processing Technology. From January 2016 to the present, he has served as the Director of International Joint Research Center of Evolutionary Intelligence and Robotics. From May 2018 to the present, he has served as the Executive Director of the Shantou Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing. He is also an Associate Editor of the JCR Q1 journal of Complex & Intelligent Systems.
His main research interests are artificial intelligence, robotics, swarm intelligence, computational intelligence, design automation, machine learning, and machine vision. Before returning to China, he chaired and completed three national science and technology projects for the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation and supervised three successful PhD students at DTU. Since his return to China, he has led 30 national and provincial research projects, including projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Basic Research Projects of the Science and Technology Commission of the Central Military Commission, with a total project cost of more than RMB 37 million. He has published or presented 243 papers in international journals and conferences, including 86 SCI-retrieved papers (106 journal papers in total), 123 EI-retrieved papers (137 conference papers in total), with 5100 citations and an H-index of 36. He was selected as one of the top 2% of scientists in the world in 2021 and 2022 by Stanford University. Sixty-enght patents have been granted, including 37 invention patents and 31 utility model patents. Nine software copyrights have been approved. One monograph in Chinese and one monograph in English have been published. His representative achievements have been published in top international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering. He has been invited many times to give keynote speeches at important national and international conferences (GECOO, WCCI, CEC, ECOLE, etc.). Currently, he is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), executive director (vice president designate) of the Guangdong Society of Image and Graphics, executive member of the Intelligent Robotics Committee of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, member of the Intelligent Simulation Optimization and Scheduling Committee of the Chinese Society of Simulation, member of the Big Data Committee of the Chinese Association of Automation, member of the Computer Vision Committee of the Guangdong Society of Image and Graphics, member of the Document Image Analysis and Recognition Committee of the China Society of Image and Graphics, and a member of the First Expert Committee of the Intelligent Manufacturing Society Consortium of the Guangdong Association of Science and Technology. He is an evaluation expert for the National Natural Science Foundation, the Science and Technology Award of the Ministry of Education, the Changjiang Scholars of the Ministry of Education, and other projects. He has been awarded the Science and Technology Progress Award of the China Society of Image and Graphics, the Popularization Award of the Chinese Association of Automation, the Engineering Medal of Merit by the Russian Academy of Engineering, the China Industry-University-Research Innovation Cooperation Award, and the Science and Technology Award of the China General Chamber of Commerce, among others.
